The Modern Arabic Machine installation

“mounir fatmi’s oeuvre has often displayed a fraught relationship to architecture, addressing the dystopic effects of the modernist experiment or arrogant contemporary displays of power and economic might. “Modern Times” explores architecture in the Middle East, raising the question of the human impact of this unrelenting construction machine.

The artist is sympathetic to Chaplin’s character, whose slapstick encounter with the factory machine suggeststhe human obstacle to a perfectly streamlined, mechanical production. mounir fatmi explains: “I want to be the product that the machine fails, otherwise one will think that the machine is perfect”

NPR’s Michele Norris hosted a fascinating discussion on Black men and “hyper-masculinity” on Thursday with Duke University s Professor of African & African American Studies Mark Anthony Neal.

Why Can’t We Take Pictures in Art Museums?

It’s a scene that plays itself out hundreds of times a day in American museums: a mother and her fidgety teenage daughter stand before a famous painting—in this case, Caravaggio’s The Toothpuller, from the early 17th century. The mom pulls out a cell phone and poses her daughter in front of the work, a funny-grotesque image of a smirking dentist performing an extraction. As she frames the shot, a guard steps forward. “No photos,” he says. The woman apologizes. She and her daughter slip out of the room and continue on to the next gallery…..[Full story HERE]
